An overview of higher education in Hong Kong, the eight UGC universities and the five research universities, how to use this portal, and FAQs.

"HKUniFront" is an objective information portal focused on higher education in Hong Kong. This "Overview" section serves as the entry point to the entire site: it first uses a "Hong Kong Higher Education Landscape" to lay out the big picture—there are eight University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded universities in Hong Kong, five of which are comprehensive research universities; it then uses a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section to answer the most common queries. All key facts (rankings, years, tuition fees, scale) are accompanied by verifiable official sources on the spot, allowing readers to double-check for themselves.

This portal concentrates on Hong Kong's five research universities: The University of Hong Kong (HKU), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), City University of Hong Kong (CityU), and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).

How to use this site

  • Want to learn about a specific institution → See the [01–05] sections, one page per university covering its positioning, history, the latest four major world rankings, disciplinary strengths, and scale.
  • Want a side-by-side ranking comparison → See 06 Rankings Comparison: the QS, U.S. News, THE, and ShanghaiRanking ARWU lists presented together, with an explanation of "why the same university ranks differently on different lists."
  • Want to apply → See 07 Admissions & Applications: pathways for local (HKDSE/JUPAS), mainland Chinese, and international students, with tuition fees, scholarships, and timelines.
  • Can't decide which to choose → See 08 Choosing a University: rationally evaluate based on discipline, location, internationalisation, employment prospects, and other dimensions.

It is recommended to first read this section's "Hong Kong Higher Education Landscape" and "Frequently Asked Questions" to build a comprehensive understanding before diving into specific institutions and application details. This site is an unofficial information hub; for formal applications, please rely on the latest announcements published on the official university websites (*.edu.hk) and the UGC (ugc.edu.hk).
